Airbnb OutBound Project

Adobe Airbnb Creative Jam Design Challenge - Project Finalist Winners

Adobe Airbnb OutBound Home Screen

Project Overview

Our app, OutBound, was created to be an extension for Airbnb. My team and I were one of the Top 3 Finalists for the Adobe Airbnb Creative Jam Design Challenge. We were extremely honored to be a finalist!

Problem

Travelers have trouble figuring out what activities to do at their destination. As a result, travelers spend more than they anticipate by booking excursions when they arrive at their location.

Solution

Using our algorithm, the app will create an itinerary for the user - based on their preferences and interests. Using A.I. and the user's preferences, OutBound intelligently builds and curates an itinerary just for you, so you can quickly add, edit, and share where you want to go with your friends.

Meet Aaron the Airbnb Traveler

Meet Aaron the AirBnb Traveler - your personal A.I. travel concierge! Aaron will immediately recognize once you have booked a trip through Airbnb. He will then guide you to amazing activities and experiences, personalized just for you and your group.

We wanted to use Aaron as a way to establish trust for the user. He would be the face of the OutBound brand throughout the app. We tried to incorporate our character.

The challenges I had with this character was rendering him every time there was a background color change. To solve this, I created an object buffer to mask him for transparent webp images, but the glass reflections needed to reflect the background color.

Prototyping

Travelers often struggle to find what activities to do on vacation. Rather than planning the activities ahead of time, travelers decide to book their excursions during their visit - causing them to spend more money.
How might we help travelers plan and book their activities through a community of shared trip and memories?
This question led to our initial ideas and prototypes.

Easy Itinerary Planning

A quick questionnaire will help gather the user's travel interests and preferences. This would help the A.I. (Aaron the Airbnb traveler) identify and plan their perfect vacation. Aaron will then suggest new activities to try on your trip. We wanted to design the interace to keep the itinerary planning as simple as possible. The user enters their destination, confirms their dates, and then immediately arrange their vacation. The A.I. would also analyzing the location's season, special events happening around that week, and special deals.

Share Your Memories

We wanted to design the interace as simple as possible for sharing. After the trip, the user would have tons of photos they would want to share. they their destination, confirms their dates, and then immediately arrange their vacation. The A.I. would help plan all their activities by analyzing the location's season, special events happening around that week, and special deals.

Judges Feedback

  • The onboarding questions should be moved to the itinerary planning stage instead
  • Creating the itinerary immediately after signing up for the app was confusing to the user. To resolve this, I created new screens to identify that it was 'algorithmically' created.
  • Feedback: communicating the results of an action. When sharing the itinerary to friends/family, the user did not know if the 'share' was successful or not
  • Removed the search bar in the itinerary view as it disrupted the hierarchy of the screen
